Great video of Paul Chambers w./Coltrane (+RIP Jimmy Cobb)

  1. Chamber's quarter notes are killing through the whole thing, then he takes a great arco solo with a bit of extended technique thrown in! Wynton Kelly is amazing as well.

PC was just a kid there. 25, I think...

That is the definition of swinging like your life depended upon it. (which it does)

I always wondered where the hell Miles was during this. I guess he just didn't want to do the gig.

I was with Jimmy the first time he saw that video, we were in Berlin at the A Trane. We stopped in to unload and set up, and after we did that the owner said he had a surprise for Jimmy, and began to project the three quartet tunes against one of the walls. Jimmy remembered nothing about it, where they were (Stuttgart I believe), or why no Miles (tho he had an idea). He absolutely loved it, and he was so happy to see his buddies again. When someone played something he liked, he’d talk to them like they were there in the room. He was such a great guy, so much fun to hang with and be on the road with, let alone play with. This poster is from the same tour

Great story and wonderful to see Sid Simmons on that poster. He was beloved by everyone here in philly and we still sorely miss him.
