Ive played a Warwick thumb...pretty growly there. My Spector is quite growly. Its a Spector Q5, and if i lean heavily on the neck pickup it growls like hell. Combined with just a SMALL amount of fret buzz, it doesnt get really transfered through the amp, but it adds this middy growl.

I have trouble keeping up with all the different terms and descriptions of a sound... but one of the nastiest, dirtiest bass sounds I have ever heard is Jack Bruce on Frank Zappa's Apostrophe. That song is stankville dirty to the max. I have no idea what he used though.

My '77 Rick 4001 strung with new light guage Rotosounds
and on full neck pickup. Pure, warm, growly filth. Sounds like
a grizzly waking up from 6 months of hibernation. You gotta
    love it.
