A 0.045 0.065 0.085 0.105 is a standard (medium) guage for 4 string sets, it is usually what comes on new basses. The number is a decimal of an inch (for example and only an example: 1.000 would mean the diameter (thickness) of the string is one inch). The higher the number, the thicker the string and the more tension and mass.

the differences between some strings is so minor though. like regular lights, which are .045, .065, .080, .100, and mediums which are .045, .065, .085, .110. is the .005 and .010 on the A and E strings really that noticeable?
