So I'm at GC buying some strings for my bass, and a guy walks up to the guitar amp display rack behind me and I hear him ask the clerk "How many watts per channel is this amp?". I look back, and find that he is pointing at a Mesa Stereo 20:20. The clerk responds,"Uhhh, I dunno, I have to go in back and look it up". I try to wait and keep my mouth shut but can't help it. "Twenty watts per channel", I say. The clerk:"How do you know?"

    Hmmmm...... Lets see......

20:20 on the front panel maybe?

That particular clerk worked in the guitars section. Pretty scary, eh?

So that would make a Peavey 5150 51wpc on one side and 50wpc on the other?

  4. No Brad, if your Peavey were 51 wpc and 50 wpc that would equal 202 watts and it would be a 4 channel  ;)

Duh. Obviously the clerk didn't have 20:20 vision...

    :p

  6. no no no..

    20:20 = 1

so it's 1 watt per channel

    :p

    No, not really.
Mars & GC are like the Wal-Mart, Home Depot, McDonald's, etc of music stores. The 'help' is paid minimally & treated like a piece of meat...whatcha expect?
What's as bad(IMO) are the yahoo clerks in Record stores; they're really clueless(except for one great 'Mom & Pop' store here in-town called Birdland Records...the owner(Barry) knows every ***damn thing.

You're right, Jim... sometimes you get what you pay for:D

  11. If it's that simple what does it say about the guy who asked how many watts it had? How many watts does the Carvin RC210 have? Don't look it up just see if you can figure it out by the model number.

  12. This has made my corona spew from my nose.

I now have a new "cool" thing. Watts / Gallon...priceless. BJ's the big kahuna in my book.

It just goes to show you. Don't shop at GC unless you exactly what you want and how much you'll pay for it.

actually hambone, that would be 201 watts total. 50+51 = 201.

I was talking mainly about the clerk. Carvin does not title their products in the same way Mesa does, so it just doesn't apply here. Lets have a little review here:)

    Nomad 45 = 45 watts
    Nomad 55 = 55 watts
    Nomad 100 = 100 watts
    F-30 = 30 watts
    F-50 = 50 watts
    F-100 = 100 watts
    20/20 Stereo = 20 watts per channel
    50/50 Stereo = 50 watts per channel
    Stereo Simul-Class 2:90 = yup you guessed it- 90 watts x 2 channels

Just for kicks I'll throw this in too:

    M-Pulse 360 = 360 watts
    M-Pulse 600 = 600 watts
    Bass 400 = 400 watts
    Bass 400+ = maybe a tad more than 400
    Buster bass 200 = 200 watts

    No confusion there.

Now I wouldn't venture to say anything bad about the guy asking, who knows, he might not even play guitar. A clerk that works with that stuff every day, though??? I mean, Mesa's titling scheme isn't exactly rocket science. Most people seem to pick up on it kinda quickly.

I try to stick to just buying strings and such there if I can help it.

Maybe I should tell the story about the guy in drums that didn't know the difference between 7A's and 747's last week when I was picking up sticks for my drummer. :D
