I'm not looking for distortion, but for gain.

My amp is no where reaching its max potential with the volume knob on max.

I tried plugging my bass into a guitar distortion pedal, kept the distortion gain to minimal, so as it wouldn't actually distort my bass. The volume level was WOW. I got max power at 7 on my amps power knob!

I know they have bass preamps that could probably do a better job at this, but they all are priced somewhat out of my budget. Guitar distortion is much cheaper.

Are there any possibly negative effects from the guitar distortion?

What do you recomend I do?
    Should I fork over $40 for a Boss DS-1?

The negative effects would be reduced low end (some pedals would be better than others) and the "Tone Suck" feature that comes standard with most guitar stompboxes. You might be better off with an overdrive-type pedal that emphasizes a clean boost though.

  3. I forked over the money for a Boss DS-1 because the guy at the music shop said "Lot's of people use this for bass." BEWARE! The DS-1 sucks the bottom end right out. Needless to say I now have a brand new DS-1 in the box with all the papers and need to sell it.
