Guitar teachers/lessons

Discussion in 'General Instruction [BG]' started by Davidoc, Mar 20, 2002.

  1. Is it commonplace for guitar teachers to teach in tab? I wasn't surprised when my younger brother who's a guitarist came home from lessons with tabs he was told to practice.

    Is this common?

  2. If an instructor gave me tabs I think I'd have to find a new teacher (in fact, the only lessons I have ever taken, I quit, in part, for that reason).

That's kinda like parents giving a kid a wheelchair to learn to walk.

I hope he's not paying much for those lessons. I would figure out how serious your brother is about guitar lessons, because tabs are something to be avoided in early musical development. ::dons asbestos socks:: I would research a new teacher.

  4. Damn, TABS from an instructor! I used tabs, still do to an extent, but at least my instructor tried to teach me how to read, and some theory. I wonder how qualified the instructor really is.
