been practicing fingerstyle on bass hard for 2 years after many years of lead guitar ....honestly, i thought bass was bass ...but after owning a Sterling Ray, Amex jazz, Ibanez 500, 505, warwick taranis, sx p bass....i am lost ...this is as bad as my crossover from strat to tele for the sake of chicken pickin'' .....took years to get over the comfort of strat tone. i like elements of the classics - p - j - musicman ...can't settle on one ....love the wick but it's let's me down in bars live ...great for recording .....so frustrated! help!? after about 5 years of tele from strat ...i realized that the tele could do anything on a gig pretty damn good ...from country to van halen ...i beleive i can have this relationship with one bass ...but which one?
dude ...i thought it would be easy...my plan was to get one good recording bass for my studio ...but i got so in love with it i asking for gigs ....now i practice like a highschooler and am in the throws of tonal hell! my brain is consumed by bass player mags and basslines ...i should've known better ....i'm 40 years old ...nothing's changed sinse i picked up a guitar in '86. mom told me i was getting too much into this!
yup! why did i think any different of bass? one bass? LOL i own 10 guitars or more ...good lord ...you confirmed my worst fears! so...to get any sleep at night ...i need a J, P, and a humbucker bass - EB ...well.....my wick is a j / mm .....American made that is my (my needs) ..tired of messing with the frets on the SX...
get a bass that has a p pickup, and a bridge humbucker. for the bridge humbucker, install a three way coil tap for parallel, single coil, and series operation. if you really want to get interesting, stick a mudbucker in the neck position. BAM! insta-swiss army bass.
It's not just which bass, but what strings to put on it. And what amp. And which cab. And how to EQ. And then just maybe a pickup change...
