In the style of the above post... favorite acoustic tone is that of Dispatch.

Favorite distortion: Third Eye Blind on "1000 Julys"

    Favorite Clean: John Frusciante
  5. Graig Chaquico for newish style Latin guitar.

Grant Geisman for a Wes Montgomery style jazz sound.

Check out this link; there's a ton of good players here.

They're all just different to me.

I dig `em all for what they do.

How boring it would be if there were "bests."

Interesting how live tone and recorded tone can be two different animals. And since a number of Texas guitarists have made the list, some thoughts in that vein...

Got to see Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jeff Beck on tour together, and had awesome seats, about sixth row or so. I'd say without hesitation that I admire Jeff Beck more, but the tone that Stevie got coming off the stage made Jeff's guitar sound, well, just weak and pitiful. Score one for the late Stevie.

Eric Johnson - Generally sounds better live than on tape.

A new Texas geetarist who hasn't been mentioned - Monte Montgomery. Listen to him on tape and sorta shrug. Hear the sounds his guitar makes live, and you grab onto yourself to make sure you really still have a body.

For me it was Jerry Garcia for tone. Sure, sometimes he'd hit sour notes, but for pure tone; no one sounds like Garcia.
