It is very easy to use. Two knobs - one sets the amount of compression and the other the output level. It is a very transparent compressor, it doesn't change the original tone. Some compressors I've used, like the Boss CE-3, do change the tone.

Compression is easy to understand, it raises the lowest volume sounds and lowers the highest volume, keeping things at a more even level. It can even out volume differences between strings, and volume differences due to playing technique. It should normally be used sparingly, too much sounds very squashed. It shouldn't sound like you are using an effect if done properly.
