Could be crappy. I despise gold hardware too. Brand New Copley CEB-59NT Electric Bass Guitar *FREE SHIPPING* | eBay
I had that model. I called it the Fauxbias since the laminations are similar to a Tobias. I thought it played very well and sounded great. Kinda ugly and sharp cornered for my tastes though. Would make a great model to reshape and refinish. Round over those corners and get rid of the ugly colors and it could be a great bass. I remember really liking the neck pickup soloed.
I had $350 worth of fun with mine. Tonally it was a bit thick. If I still had it I would run it passive with the inside coils only/outside coils only Bartolini setup and take about a pound of wood off reshaping it.
It arrived today and it's better than expected. It needed a setup but I haven't encountered any issues. Fit and finish are good. Can't find any blemishes. I had it in my head that it would be passive but it's got an 18v 2 band preamp. I hate to say this but it's got a nice Stingrayesque(ish) kind tone with the rear pickup solo'd. When both pickups are used you can get a thick, gooey tone. At 209.00 I'm really happy.
Ok, got pics. It weighs a little over 10lbs. It's kinda cheesey looking in my opinion. It really needs a 3 band eq instead of a 2 band. I installed 2 new batteries and a set of D'addario 170's today. For the price I paid I am pleased.
I took it to a gig last night. I played it the last set. It sounded fine but there was a small buzz. I'm not sure if it was the fault of the bass. It was an older building and I was having hum issues with my stuff before we started. We moved power cords to different circuits and that helped but I still had to use a ground lift. After the gig one of that guys came up and said "That bass (I was thinking he was going to tell me it sucked) sounds great. What it is?" I have a gig tonight and will test it further. I may have to shield the control cavity.
Update! The blend pot has become very scratchy. Deoxit does not cure the noise. The barrel jack causes a loud pop when you move just right. I've ordered a Tone Monster preamp and a football jack plate to cure all that.
upgrade the pickups and it would sound even better. The weak point with cheap basses is always the electronics. I would dump all the pots too
I don't know if you have used the Tonemonster products before, but it offers some pretty serious bang for the bucks. I have had a couple the were not quite what I was looking for- but still pretty good stuff.
The pots I agree with however some of my favorite pickups have been very cheap. And I just finished a build with $10 Chinese pickups and it sounds great.
