Hair tie at the nut?

    I am not sure if this is right place to post this, sorry if its not. I have seen several bassist put what looks like a fuzzy hair tie right above the nut on there bass. Is this to quiet open strings?

    It's an inexpensive trick that's easy to change very quickly.
