hanging by the neck until dead?

Discussion in 'Hardware, Setup & Repair [BG]' started by c-ba55, Feb 21, 2002.

  1. Is there any real effect from leaving a bass hanging on the wall, supported only at the headstock? The weight of the body would be pulling downward on the neckjoint constantly, is all I could figure to worry about.

I paid for all my gear myself. Well, me and MasterCard.
I'm sure I'll get some argument on this.

I believe it is actually good for the instrument to hang it from the headstock. The weight of the bass body counteracts the stress on the neck from the truss rod and the strings.

How about if it is a well constructed bass it will have no effect if it is hung, in case, in stand, or in hand. Just a thought. Ideally that is how it should be anyway.

  4. I would imagine that it would keep the neck straight.

I do martial arts and if we wanted to straighten a warped staff, we would have to steam it while it is hung from one end (totally impractical - but that's how it is done).

  5. Now there's an idea.. steam your bass... as moderator i wish a full written report on this....
