I can purchase one for $45. Is this a good deal for a case that goes for $70 new? Is this a good case regardless of price? Is a hard case worth buying over a gig bag?

I use both. I store mine in a hard shell case and depending on where we are playing I take the bass in either a hard shell or a gig bag. My gig bags aren't the cheapies, nor are they the upper end. I use a Levy's thick padded bag and a Godin gig bag. Cases are Fender.

I had a Gator bag for a short while but found it somewhat cumbersome. It is well padded and will allow you to carry a good amount of gear along with the bass. It is more a matter of comfort. If you are going to be on the road, then a hard shell, preferrably something highly durable is what you want.
