hey guys, i just got a new 80 gb hard drive and after i installed it (windows 98se ) it only shows up as a 73 gb hard drive, i know thats being a little picky and all, but what causes that and is there anyway i can get those other 7 gbs back? also how do i make a back up of my harddrive in case it were to mess up or something?
All drives are less once they are formatted. A drive might be advertised as 80 gigs, but it is only 80 gigs in an unformatted state, once you format it, it loses some memory, you can't run unformatted drives. that's the breaks, all HDs are like this.
It varies on the size. My 30 gig HD(old computer don't laugh) is actually only about 25.6 gigs once formatted. the iPod 10 gig, actually stores only about 8.4 or something like that. 120 gigs lose around 10-11 gigs I think. so yeah, it is normal for an 80 gig to lose around 7 gigs of space.
They did not screw you. http://www.byteoutofcrime.org/newsV6I1.html 80,000,000,000 : 1,073,741,824 = 74.5 GB
yeah prolly...mine is 60GB but it lost 5 so now its down to 55...yours is 80 and it lost 7...seems sensible
