All drives are less once they are formatted.

A drive might be advertised as 80 gigs, but it is only 80 gigs in an unformatted state, once you format it, it loses some memory, you can't run unformatted drives.

that's the breaks, all HDs are like this.

is it normal for them to lose 7 gigs?

    It varies on the size.

My 30 gig HD(old computer don't laugh) is actually only about 25.6 gigs once formatted.

the iPod 10 gig, actually stores only about 8.4 or something like that.

120 gigs lose around 10-11 gigs I think.

so yeah, it is normal for an 80 gig to lose around 7 gigs of space.

    80,000,000,000 : 1,073,741,824 = 74.5 GB
