Hardcore help

Discussion in 'General Instruction [BG]' started by crazybassist601, Nov 10, 2005.

  1. So, Im in a hardcore band and I was wondering what a hardcore bassist should be proficient at or what are some good techniques to learn to make me really stand out. We have a lot of very present bass and it is very punchy, but I dont know wether to follow the dueling guitars or make up my own riff to play underneath them.. Some help please?

Maybe you could approach this as a "felt but not heard" situation. You could make up your own riffs, or just play anything. For me, I hardly ever sync with guitars, esp if there's 2 of them.

Play to the song, not the genre. Try everything, if it sounds good run with it, if not, try something else.

  4. some stuff I was doing was tremelo picking. Is in a breakdown my band would go the open D hardcore breakdown and I would tremelo in between. I was thinking about sweeping on a bass but would that be cheesy or strange or anything? I also Have been known to palm mute (not really known to be done on a bass exceptionally often). I also want to know if pinch harmonics on a bass would be acceptable. Are there any other tricks or stuff to add flavor. It could be a guitar trick, a bass trick, or a trick associated to music in general. I just want to make sure I have a full arsenal for my genre.
So far good comments. Surprizingly its hard for me to play a song and not a genre.

im kind of in the same situation, except we incorporate "pretty" interludes and intro's within our songs. One thing I do,during a breakdown is keep syncopated with the guitar, but also play "off" of the drummer's fill,as long as it's tasteful.

*shrug* what do you guys sound like? gimme bands that are parallel, musically to yours.

  6. We are strange. we are like Avenged sevenfold mixed with the bled (breakdown wise) and metallica and iron meiden. We have dueling guitars and heavy breakdowns with offnotes and stuff, then we break it down randomly and change tempo to a slow acoustic riff and stuff. It is pretty awesome.
But being that it is kind of a unique style, I have no clue what to play half the time.
