I would say it depends on your playing style. If you're a fat tone and grind kinda guy, an Ampeg SVT-Cl or Mesa 400+ is perfect. However if you're playing a lot of complex lines, a hybrid head might sound a bit faster and brighter. Try an Ampeg SVT-4Pro, Ashdown EVO-II, or the like.

 

+1 on the Ampeg 4 pro. Also look at some SWR stuff. Like the 550x, or even the SM line. SWR has really mean tone, cold and clear. I love SWR.

 

The same amps that are good for normal hardcore rock and softcore prog rock will also work for hardcore prog rock.

Maybe you should be more specific about what you want in an amp.
