Hartke 5500

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by exitenglish, Feb 1, 2004.

  1. Heres the deal, i have no knowledge about heads and cabinets. If i bought a Hartke 5500 (500-Watts), would i need a 500 watt cabinet, or 2 250 watt cabinets?

You can have more watts in the head than what your cabinet is rated for, but it usually a good idea to not "underpower" your cabinet...i.e.- a 200 watt head with a 500 watt cab.

One thing to be sure of is ohms. If you have an 8 ohm cabinet and the Hartke puts out 500 watts at 4 ohms, then plugged into your 8 ohm cabinet, that same Hartke 5500 will put out 250 watts into 8 ohms (half the watts)...whereas if it were a 4 ohm cab, the head would put out the full 500 watts.

If you use two 250 watt cabs and they are 8 ohm cabs, then the two of them together would place your amp under a 4 ohm load and the head would put out 500 watts into those cabs. If you had a single 4 ohm, 250 watt cab, the amp would put out 500 watts, but it is ok to have more watts in the head than what the cab is rated for (so long as you don't drive it too excessively, i.e. - too high a volume setting).

I'm sure someone here can give you a better answer than mine.

It wont put out half the watts, usually about 2/3 of the power rating at 4ohms is produced when running a load of 8 ohms

I think you mean the hartke 5000 (i'm not aware of a 5500) which puts out 250+250 in bi-amp mode. a 1x15 and 2x10 cabs would be common choices to use with that model

I have one and like it, i biamp into an ampeg pr1528he

Actually there is a new Hartke 5500. It is exactly the same as the 3500 only it puts out 500 watts and it comes in a standard amp head case.

    open mouth, insert foot! :p

I'd checked hartke's web site before replying, but just saw on the back of the neighbor's bass player mag an ad for the new 5500!

btw: how cool is it to have a bass playing neighbor?
