I've been finding AWESOME prices at zzounds.com and other places on hartke's heads, like the 3500, 3000, and 4000. I've heard good things about them, and also horror stories. So is the situation good sound but no durability? Or just the opposite, or what? I'm trying to be wise with my spending $400. Should I get the 4000 for $450, or go with a used swr bass 350 for $400. Speaking of SWR, is there a difference(other than age) between the red 350 and the black-face 350? Thanks!

  2. I’ve used a 3500 head for years and like them very much. It’s been incredibly reliable, not having let me down once in over four years of constant gigging.
Now that’s just my opinion, I know that gmstudio99 our Bass Moderator dislikes them.
As always you must try whatever you are thinking about buying and certainly try out the used SWR you mentioned which are also great amps. I hear that the redhead is better but have never tried one.

Here's a couple of links for some older Talkbase Hartke threads.

Had a H2000 head for I think 8 years, never any problems, except for one break down in the first few months, but I think it was because I did use an instrument cable instead of a speaker cable - uhhh.
As it was a little harsh sounding and not really overpowered for my needs I upgraded recently.

Most people say Hartke is great value for the money and very well built for a Korean product.

The H4000 recently got the 'best buy award' from Bass Player Magazine - not bad!
