Has anyone ever played through a Simms-Watts?

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by Matthew West, Jun 21, 2001.

  1. Just wondering if anyone here has ever played through a Simms-Watts 100 watt head. I'm trying to decide between getting one of these or a Sound City 120 head, and was wondering what their general sound charateristics may be.

    I have a suspicion that Simms,Selmer,Sound City
Hiwatt,Vamp,Watkins etc etc were ALL made by the same manufacturer.
They all seem to use common components (Partridge transformers, spraque Capacitors even IDENTICAL chassis in some cases).
The Simms - Watts 100 is almost identical to the Selmer 100 that I use.
They have a really BIG sound, masses of bottom end.
Volume wise I'tll probably blow away anything Solid State thats under 400 or so watts.
They seem louder (to me) than a Fender Bassman 100.
Word of warning though - Have it properly serviced.
At least have the capacitors replaced.
Replace the output Valves (el34's) with with Harma e34l's and It'll really rock.
