Have you ever been in the audience for a Springer, Maury, etc. show?

I was just talking with my girlfriend about this a week or so ago. If we were in the area where they filmed Jerry Springer, I would love to apply to get tickets for a taping.

    Is it lowbrow: Yep.
Is it evidence for the decline of Western civilization: Possibly.
Would it really be a cool bucket list item and conversation topic at parties: Totally!

I had a friend from grad school who was an audience member on Montel. The camera caught her rolling her eyes at Sylvia Browne. So has anyone ever been in the audience for something like this? If so, tell us your experience (within the bounds of the Talkbass TOS of course ;)).

My wife and I were in the audience for a David Letterman taping in 2002. I was a huge fan up until that day. He was very arrogant and a real jackwagon to the audience. I quit staying up to watch his show after that.

My favorite trash tv host was the late Morton Downey Jr.

I once amused Joey Ramone, who I met in a nightclub when we were both rather drunk, by asking him
a boatload of questions about Downey (Joey had just recently guested on the show)
and none whatsoever about Da Bruddas.

  10. Jerry Springer...the lowest of the lowest of TV broadcasting ever. No redeeming social value what so ever. You could not pay me enough to attend.

I think you are being rather narrow minded, considering all that Jerry has done to advance understanding and tolerance for man-horse love.

He made numerous comments during breaks about how the audience sucked, didn't applaud enough, didn't laugh hard enough, etc (when the applaud prompters were lit up). He swore at someone from the staff during the breaks asking where he found such a lousy audience at. Had he been funny and not a sniveling jackwagon, I'm sure the audience would have been a bit more jovial too.

Me and a couple of friends went to a taping of Jerry Springer once, around 1995 or so. It was tawdry and unsettling, but we were three winos who didn’t care about anything. The audience had to be escorted up through a big elevator and through a hallway next to all the green rooms, so after the show was taped, we slipped out of our group and into a room filled with catered food. As we began gorging ourselves, a large rowdy group entered and we found ourselves in the middle of a near-brawl love-triangle that was about to spill out onto the stage of the Jenny Jones show that filmed next door. I forgot to mention that I was wearing an eyepatch, for no reason other than to attract as much attention as possible.

Eventually we were escorted out by security, along with the Jerry Springer guests (a pair of drag queens and their shocked mothers) who were being swept out like a pile of used napkins. On the way out, one of my friends attempted to abscond with a life-sized, full-body framed portrait of Jerry Springer, but abandoned it when he realized that it would never fit through the revolving door.

    No, but...

I dedicated a lot of time to television when I was in NYC for a week:

    David Letterman
    Jimmy Fallon
    Anderson Cooper (Lynda Carter co-hosted)
Saturday Night Live (Kevin Hart hosted - Ryan Lewis & Macklemore were the musical guest)

My wife went to see Oprah and they called on her to ask a question, which made it to air. Fortunately, I was at work all day and couldn't go.

I was hoping she would cone home with a free car or at least a year's supply of Rice-a-Roni or something. But, nothing.

I was at a Letterman taping when Mitch Hedberg was the comic at the end and I went to a Jimmy Kimmel taping when Killswitch Engaged was on (they were pretty cool and played some extra stuff for the fans there). If you go just know that studios tend to be cold. Bring a sweat shirt.

I ended up with nothing from all the shows I attended in NYC. Bought a SNL shirt in Rockefeller Center, the one with Christopher Walken (more cowbell).
In L.A. I had better luck getting gift bags at game shows. I'm still using a water bottle I got from Let's Make a Deal.

    Great. Story.

I was never at a taping. But a former friend of mine was ON Dr.Phil's show. It was a total embarrassment..... so much so that he and his wife moved away.
