alright guys, i don't know much about amps, i'm more of a bass junkie. right now i've got an ampeg ba-115sp bass cube combo, and it's time to upgrade. any suggestions on a head that i could get for under $800? i play mostly rock/jazz/indie-rock type range. any ideas? i'm gettin my 4th paycheck at the end of next week, and i'll have about $725 i guess. i play a fender MIA jbass along with an ovation celebrity 5, and occasionally an ibanez sr 305 as a backup and an essex p-bass copy fretless that i'm refinishing. help!
I'd suggest Genz Benz GBE600, which is probably gonna cost you around 800$, but if you have 725$ that is not an option.
Unless you need something new, I'd look for something like a good used Hartke 3500 or SWR 350 or a Peavey T-Max or similar. Easily had for under $400, maybe not way under, but under nontheless. PlanetBoulder's Trace sounds like a good deal. what's the output on that baby PB?
You may be able to find a used Mesa Boogie M-Pulse line head in that price range. My Walkabout (in mint condition, with gig bag) was $600. Tom.
Most accidentally suggestive thread title EVER. I've always liked trace elliot heads...maybe look at PB's. -Dave
QSC RMX850 $299.99 (830W @ 4 Ohms bridged) Sansamp RBI $299.99 SKB 4-space roto rack $69.99 total: 669.97 +tax or shipping or whatever (and you need a cable or two) ------------------------------------------------ The QSC is kind of heavy but moving to lighter power amp like a Carvin DCM-1000 would add ~$80. If you were feeling lucky you could go with one of the "off brand" power amps like the: Behringer EP-1500 $299.99 (same price, heavy but more power - 1400W @ 4Ohms bridged) Nady XA-900 $199.99 (heavy, 900W @ 4 Ohms bridged) Nady SPA-850 $249.99 (heavy, 850W @ 4 Ohms bridged) Those are all new prices from Musicians Friend (you can get any GC to match those and might be able to find better prices). To maximize your dollars you can go used. If you go with separates then if you decide you want another sound, just swap out the preamp. You can even start with a Sansamp BDDI for a preamp or something like that. The stereo power amps give you a lot of options on how many cabs and what impedance they are. Have fun shopping
Used, you have a lot of options. New, craigb's suggestion is a very good one, my one reservation being whether the SKB Roto-Rack (which is their lighter-duty rack) would handle the weight of the QSC RMX well enough. Very likely it would, I'm just not sure, from what I've seen of those racks. If you prefer all-in-one heads and want to buy new, my favorite head in that price range is the Carvin R1000.
There was an R1000 over in the classifieds a little while ago for $350 IIRC I don't remember who had it. no need to spend $800. I wouldn't hesitate to deal with Planet Boulder on the Trace Elliot, although I never have dealt with him. He seems to have very good rep. K
I got a brand new SVT-3 Pro for $700.00 shipped. It took a month and a half of looking. The deals are out there, you just have to be patient until one presents itself.
K-Frog - Total output is 600 watts @ 4ohms, keeping in mind that it is a mono, non-bridgeable amp. Has a 7-band EQ and produces a nice, warm tone.
Ashdown EVO 300 or perhaps the 500 used... Absolutely love these heads...spent months trying out all sorts of amps left and right...I didn't even want to like the Ashdown, and resisted even trying it (don't know why, really...) - however, as soon as I plugged in and plucked the first note, I knew I'd found what I was looking for... anyhow! give 'em a shot - if tube-warmth and fabulous punch are what you're going for, you'll be thrilled with one.
I picked up an SWR Bass 350 for under $600 from GC ATL... I bet that you could pick up their 550x for around that, if not under $800. Great versatile amp. j
j-raj I'm using the quote in your sig. at my next practice. I love it! Planet Boulder, doesn't that beast weigh in around 50+ lbs.? K
I'd second the SVT3 Pro. Great tone. Extremely flexible patch panel. Resale is very good. The Peavey Firebass is a contender. GK's new 1001 looks good, too.
the Hartke 3500 is great, so are Carvin R600 and R1000 heads, GK800rbIII may be an option, Used Edens?????? Peavey has a pretty good 700 watt head out there for your amount. Are you looking for $800 for a head or a head AND a cab???
