looking for a good head under $1000 to drive my 8x10 fridge cab. GK fusion 800, Mesa carbine m6 etc. There are some many amps out there, need something versatile that can drive a huge cab, or work well with my smaller Hi-Fi Epifani cabs. I've done a ton of research, wouldn't mind some TB IMHO's though! Would something like the GK fusion be enough to make me poo myself in front of an 8x10?

  2. Any amp will work. Find one that you like the sound of.

Any amp WILL work, but I find Ampegs work best with the H810e ;) I'd suggest any of their amps except maybe the B2RE.

If it were me, I'd put an Ampeg SVT CL/VR, Fender Super Bassman or Ampeg V4B on top of that cab - should be able to get close to that price target if you go used.

If you want to go "non-tube", I'd go with a Mesa Walkabout or Ampeg SVT 7Pro

I really didn't like the Fusion 550 - that amp is super-freaking-loud for its power rating and yes, through that cab should make you poo yourself. The tube front end can get nice, grindy OD. I just didn't find it to be particularly warm and round for whatever reason (which is what, to my ears, sounds best with the 810)

I've heard the svt cl isn't as good as the heritage model? I know what i am getting into with the heritage cabinet...I've also read into the svt problems although they seem to be fixed in more recent years.

I've not had a chance to play them side by side, but while I bought the Heritage, I'm happy with either. I just thought the Heritage looked better and it's the last SVT I'll be getting, so I thought I better go out on a high note ;)

RE: problems, you might occasionally run into problems with tubes just because they're tubes, but generally new SVT's perform as well as older ones.

  7. Since you had mentioned MB 800 Fusion, I have one paired with Traynor TC412 Cab... and with 1 obnoxiously loud guitar (Orange TH30 / 212 Cab) and a crazy loud drummer I don't ever turn it past 10 o'clock.
Definitely a beast in the tiny box.

I'd assume any head that's "too clean" or transparent would be warmed up by the tweeter less cabinet. I have a 4x10 hlf amped classic cab and it is warmer than my epifani with the same head. A hifi head through a lo fi cab?

I'm 90 percent sold on a terror bass 1000! I tried the 500 some months ago, could be a gnarly match.

I just picked up a brand new SVT CL for 900 from guitar center.

I'm guessing it would be easy to find a similar deal in your area. Mentioning this due to your price range.

  11. I have two SVT-CLs, a Heritage and a "regular" and both sound great. If there is a tone difference it's subtle and likely just the tubes. If money is no object I'd recommend the Heritage but both will get you there.

My vote goes for an all-tube Ampeg SVT head (CL, II, II-PRO) for obvious reasons, unless weight is an issue.

Then, I'd go for the Aguilar TH500. It doesn't 100% replace a real SVT, but it is so close that you likely won't miss the additional 90lbs in a band setting. It's an amazing little amp.
