When you mount the string retainer at the top of the neck, what do you do to keep the neck from splitting? And with the Status Graphite String retainers/ bridges, how would you attach single-ball strings? Thank you.
What's so headless about this question? What you have to do is to predrill teh screwholes with the proper bit. And you would benefit from a not too thin neck end, superb glue joints and thread inserts. More interesting, though: what do you do when the neck end does split?
Aside from reciting the four-letter serenade? I suppose throw the neck out and begin anew. Well, I thought the Status retainer needed to go on the cut surface (when a piece of wood is cut against the grain, that rough surface), so I was a little concerned. Thanks.
Not necessarily. It might be possible to open the crack a little, very carefully, and inject some low viscosity glue, close the crack and clamp it for a while. In many cases, this path leads to another chance to attach your endcap.
But the wood at the crack point (much like a stream of water eroding the land forward) is weaker, is it not? But I am still lost when it comes to the point of attachment. Is it like the top or the bottom (the black represents the string retainer, and the brown the neck)? https://mywebspace.wisc.edu/sbogucki/web/headless.jpg?uniq=8b3rzd (If the page doesn't work, or if I'm not allowed to do that, please let me know) And if it is the top, how does one prevent the necessary drilling from cracking the neck blank?
