I'm going to be building a fretless bass that will probably have an alder body, maple through body neck and an ebony fretboard. I want some extreme growl out of my pickups and I do not want a "P-ish" sound. What pickups do you think would work well with the body without emptying my wallet?

I'd recommend Barts or EMGs, but this question might be better asked over in the Luthiers Corner.

    Yeup,

I agree with rumblethump... I'd only add that you might consider dual coil humbucking pickups from either bart or EMG.

FWIW... the EMG's are less expensive. I just installed a Bart and an EMG in my Carvin LB76... there is a different thread with MP3 samples of the new pickups....
