Help a n00b distinguish between different bass sounds

Obviously people perfer different brands for their sounds. As a guy who is newer to bass, I struggle to hear the big differences and distinctions people swear by!

To practice, I looked up various basses used on different recordings, but I can't tell what is caused by the actual bass, and what is caused by the different amp/preamp/effect/ect.

I know some people can (or at least claim to be able to) hear a recording and tell you what kind of bass was used... I find this ability remarkable!

For example, what different sounds can I get from a Fender Precision as opposed to a Jazz? What sounds do they offer that a Stingray doesn't?

What sound should I look for to tell the difference between a Fender MIA and a Fender MIM?

Any help to get me started on educating my ears would be most appreciated!
