Lately, I've been noticing some undesirable noises and weird behavior from my AG500. Well, I've noticed it for a while, but I haven't had the time or willingness to actually care. The other night I tried doing something about it, mainly armed with electronic cleaner. Success was limited, so I thought I'd ask for some help.

    - First there's the hum and hiss. If no cable is connected to the input, I sometimes get a hissing crackle, like a bad cable or corroded jack input. I sprayed the input with contact cleaner and that might have improved it a bit. My gain pot was also scratchy, so I gave all the pots a shower with the cleaner. It's better, but there's still noise. I may have to continue with the cleaning.

    - Then there's the noise that may be connected to the pot - a slight and soft distortion when playing that appears to change to the better - or worse - as I fiddle with the gain. Once or twice I've mistaken it for a ripped speaker cone, but the cab appears to be fine.

    - And then there's some popping, in lack of a better word. If I play a string fairly hard with a pick, there's a harsh pop, perhaps a bit like the input peaking. I've tried it with an active and a passive bass and with the -6db pad on or off.

Any ideas? Could it just be in need of a proper cleaning? Could it be a failing capacitor? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Try bypassing the effects loop with a jumper cable.

Very common problem on the AG500. It's the input jack. I had 2 of them do the same thing. Here's an email I got from aguilar when they fixed one of mine:

"We have finished going over your amp and have found there was a loose input jack and dirty jack terminals. This caused the amp to lose ground at certain points and pass crackling noise. After the jack was cleaned and tightened the problem went away and the amp is at factory spec. "

Awesome. Just awesome. I will give the input some more TLC. Did you experience the popping as well?

I'll try the effect loop trick as well, I forgot about that. I find the effect loop pretty weird. I've tried to use it, but I can't seem to understand how it works. Tried connecting an EBS Multidrive, but I had to turn up the knobs until way too loud and way overdriven.

Edit: The knobs on the loop. The pedal was set to a comfortable drive that was nowhere to be found with the loop controls.

I opened up the amp tonight and cleaned all the inputs and pots as best I could. I'll test it on monday and report back if the problem is still there. None of the terminals were loose, but they were probably dirty.

    Hello Haans and Lowclass
I am having the same problem with my AG500.
I sent video clips to Marco last week he said he received them but hasn't gotten back?
I am hoping to see him this week at Summer Namm.
I was wondering what the outcome was of your problem?
I will try to add my iphone video file to this post.

    ng.. video didnt upload?
anyway.. I get noise no cable plugged in.. sounds like dirty pot!
and lower volume fuzzy noise along with my playing..
    either channel.
btw: had it shipped to Aguilar a year ago for different noise issue, screw fell out and was shorting the amp..while it was there the put in new input jack.
I got the same email back from them when it was finished,
    with shipping, expensive!!
