Help an old English major?

    I've noticed the term "luthier" used frequently on this board. From the context it appears to be a maker of guitars. But I can't find the word in any of my dictionaries. Does anyone know where this word originated? Thanks. :meh:

    Notice the root: "lute" (guitar predecessor) build from there.
