Hey all. First post! After going through a divorce, I decided to pick up my old hobby again, guitar. In that process, I decided to take up bass on top of it as well. I got a couple of basses, one was a spirr of the moment Dean that was on fb mp for cheap and another is a nice Tagima I got from a Music go round. I also ended up getting a Peavey 410 cab as well on the cheap. But obviously, I need an amp, and assume a guitar amp through a bass cab would suck anyway. Here are a couple of local options. I'm a metal and rock guy btw. The Eden is $160 and the Genz Benz is $200 Thoughts?
Welcome to bass, and TalkBass! I can relate to much of your story. If you already have a separate guitar head, you might as well try it through the Peavey 4x10; you won’t damage anything, and you very well might like it. Guitar amplifiers generally don’t have the kind of wattage players want for bass, but even 50 watts can get pretty loud through a big, efficient bass cab.
If you don’t like the sound of your guitar head into your bass cab, I imagine either of those bass heads would get you plenty of boom for minimal bucks. If you don’t mind the weight, some fine bass heads from the pre-class-D era are now readily available for not much more than these prices. If you want to stay on-brand, the Peavey Mark III and IV would suit your style, as might the Centuries or even the Musicians (which also handle guitar quite well). GK 800RBs still fetch good prices, but the old 400RBs go for far less and would rock through a big cab like that. You’ve got options. How loud do you want to get?
Welcome to the forum. We are blessed with the major players in the now out of business Genz Benz. @agedhorse still services GB products and can let you know if the M line amps still have parts around. Eden may be difficult to find servicing for, should something go wrong. My thoughts.
Thanks for the advice. I see the prices there are pretty low cost as well. One of the heads the 400RB is pretty tempting if I make the drive to the Twin Cities any time soon since I can avoid shipping costs. Peaveys are kinda tempting due to cost as well. Not that I want cheap poopie only, I've just spent a lot lately so.
LOL @ poopie? It changed my word, that's funny. But also yeah I could stay with Peavey, but I'll need an endorsement at this point. I have a Peavey 6505+ and Triple X guitar amps as well. lol. But Peavey is a good brand IMO. So very tempting. But for guitar, every metal guy knows what amps what do we wanna do, but a lot of us are unsure when we venture into bass. With that I'll probably start with the pickup question eventually as well. As for fixing gear that wouldn't be much of an issue as long as I can get parts. I'm surrounded by electrical engineers and one of my good friends is one and I am very comfortable around circuit boards.
Twin Cities, eh? I grew up across the Saint Croix from the Cities I don’t know why, but the Music-Go-Round locations in (I think?) Roseville and Burnsville always seem to have incredible gear on hand. Twin Town Guitars in Minneapolis proper is awesome.
Yeah, TalkBass converts vulgar language into baby talk it’s a mildly humorous way to keep the temperature down when things might otherwise get heated. As you likely already know, metal bass can sound a lot of different ways, so a lot of different gear can get it done. If you know of a particular player whose sound comes close to what you might like, the knowledgeable folks in here will happily make more specific recommendations … possibly contradictory … baby talk may ensue You should probably go Eden/Nemesis/DNA just to keep it Minnesotan
I've never been to Twin Town Guitars but I did buy the Tagima from the Burnsville location. I try to hit up the shops when I'm in the area just to look around. I now live in Brookings SD, which has one store that's tiny and more geared towards a small amount of newer practice amps and a few new guitars and basses, but also more geared towards other stringed instruments. Good place for setups, strings, cables, and some really nice guitars and basses for their small stock, but not a place to get used gear or anything outside of practice amps as far as I can tell. Sioux Falls has some Pawn Shops and a somewhat tiny Guitar Center. Would love to have a Music-Go-Round here. One Pawn shop, Sunset Strip Pawn seems to take decent care of their instruments whereas the other one, not at all. They had this really nice bass there for $500. I'm not wanting to spend the money at this time. But the strings were rusty and they had guitars leaning on top of each other. I actually got on their case about it. Having a nice bass sitting up there with rusty strings is terrible for business. And it's not like changing strings is a huge cost or hassle.
I could probably record something in the next couple of days since I'm picking up a SM57 and post it up. Guess I never thought about it since I assumed it would sound like ass. When I tested the cab I used my Joyo Zombie 2 with distortion and it was god awful with the bass cab, and rips with all my guitar cabs, but that was also with a guitar.
Try your guitar head with a bass cab. Some sound very good. Bass amps can also work for guitar. Hendrix sounded good here using an Ampeg B-15 bass amp with his guitar. Jimi Hendrix B-15 bass amp
It very well might but it costs no more than a bit of time twiddling knobs to find out. Maybe try an EQ pedal if the EQ on the amp doesn’t get you anywhere.
‘Eden is a good head, and at $160 it’s a really good deal. Looks like the other head has more tonal shaping capabilities for the extra money.
Is your Peavey 410 4 ohms? It looks like that GB MLine "Dual Output" is a 2 channel amp and requires minimum 8 ohms to operate in bridged mode to get the full 200 watts. If the Peavey is 4 ohms you could only use it on one channel at 100 watts.
I saw @agedhorse mention in another thread he was traveling so I figure we all gotta keep a finger in the dike until he he gets back!
