    Built my first bass (another post), think I got a little extra space between the bridge and the string-through ferrules. I need strings with a minimum of about 37" from immediately under the ball to the start of the first taper.

    Anyway, got on D'Addario's website. It states, that for their "long scale" chrome flats, these strings will fit long scale basses with:

    "scale length of up to 36 1/4"

    However, when I called D'Addario to make sure, they told me that the length of the string, from under the ball to where the first taper starts measures 36 1/4.

    These are in conflict. A "scale length of up to 36 1/4", when you add 3/4" or so at the bottom to get over the bridge, and a 1/4" or so to get through the nut, would require a string length of more like 37 1/4" from under the ball to the start of the taper.

    Does ANYONE?!?!? happen to have a loose set of D'Addario "long scale" (not super long scale) chrome flats that they could actually measure and let me know the length?

    To make matters worse, I ordered a set of "long scale" strings and can only return them if I don't open them.....can't even open them to measure the length.....yeah, I checked :meh:

    I'm also afraid that "super long scale" strings may be too long and the taper might not start before the tuners.

    head------>desk

    Thanks in advance for any help. If you're someplace that sells strings, and can provide some measurements, I'd happily return these unopened and re-order from you.

    I stock and use D'Addario Chromes in both Long Scale and Super Long Scale.

    Long Scale sets are, as they say, 36 1/4" from the ball end to the start of the silk winding. They are made for 34"-35" scale basses with normal hardware.

    Super Long Scale sets are 38" from the ball end to the start of the silk winding. They are made for basses up to 36 1/2" scale with normal hardware, or 34"-35" basses that need extra length at the bridge or headstock.

    Perfect!

    Thank you very much for checking into this. Looks like I need to return the ones I've ordered as soon as I get them.

    I need to measure to make sure the super longs won't get into the tuners.

    Do you have a website with the info I'd need to order a set of super longs from you?

    Post it here (if it's not against the rules) or pm, whichever you prefer.

    Thanks Again.

    I'm a builder, not a music store! I buy the D'Addarios I have to install on the basses I build. Get your own at any of the many dealers. I get my one-off sets from JustStrings.com; If I want a quantity of a particular size, I get them straight from D'Addario.

    I answered your question because I've run into this problem before. I wish more string manufacturers would list the actual dimensions of the strings, in addition to "fits basses of this scale length". Many basses have odd hardware or geometry that requires extra length. In these cases, it's best to just measure them. D'Addario is one of the better companies in providing technical information, although they can still be a little confusing.

    D'Addario currently only has "Long Scale" (36.25" Ball to end of usable windings) available as singles besides some select B string (tapered / Super Long etc). They are working on offering ALL of their available strings as singles. This "may" be happening not to far from now ;)

    Keep in mind that strings up to about .070 can be used on all length instruments...

    Here is the break down of D'Addario lengths:

    D'Addario Short fits instruments where Ball End to Nut is up to 32"
    D'Addario Medium fits instruments where Ball End to Nut is 32" - 34"
    D'Addario Long fits instruments where Ball End to Nut is 34" - 36"
    D'Addario Super Long fits instruments where Ball End to Nut is 36" - 38"

    If you want to know other dimensions of other manufacturers strings, ask me which ones you would like to know or look in my sig...

    And by the way, when I met with the awesome folks at D'Addario a couple of months ago I brought up their phrasing of the "scale length." I hope they will be changing it :(

    Thanks Bruce. Just thought I should keep my word and offer, since I mentioned it in my original post.

    and slap, as for the folks at D'Addario, they were very amiable, very helpful, took all of 30 seconds to get tech support on the phone. I was flustered with what seemed to be a flip-flopping of the terms "scale length", "string length" and "string scale length".

    Yes their support is top notch! Many threads on that subject as well as the string length subject in general.

    An update further to this conversation - and thanks to all of you who have shared your thoughts, opinions, comments, complaints, etc, especially Jason at BSO. This debate/conversation really helped clarify some important detail.

    Earlier this month, we started a rolling production change on our most popular bass strings, with a spec change on the taper length. The previous spec as indicated in this thread was 36 1/4" - the new spec is 36 7/8". These are being made as we speak but obviously there are strings in our warehouse that will move through the various inventory channels and you should be seeing some of these on the streets soon enough. Thanks again for your help in this effort!

    Don;

    Are you planning any spec changes on the Super Long Chromes? I'm just finishing design work and starting production on several new model basses, which are all intended to fit your Super Long Chromes. They will be the standard strings as I ship them.

    If there are any dimensional changes planned, please let us know!
