I have been looking at this vintage P-Bass on Ebay for months and was considering making an offer. I am hesitating because the date codes on the pickups, pots and neck don't look like it's a 1969 to me. What do you think? The very clear neck code doesn't seem to follow any of the Fender neck code formats. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1969-VINTAG...E-/281527478872?pt=Guitar&hash=item418c586a58
Yeah, definately very high on the price. I don't think the "custom color" is worth that much premium. If it were sunburst it would be in the $4,000 range. Worse yet, I'm not so sure it's a '69.
the pickups are dated 14th week of 1970. The neck stamp to me says 2nd week of 71. You never date a Fender by the neck plate alone! Such a pretty bass though, nice color!
Lol... the seller must have seen this post. Didn't mean to tick him off. He won't allow me to make an offer or even contact him. Oh well...
I agree with Caca de Kick, the neck stamp indicates 1971. So the bass is no earlier than '71.. definitely not a true '69. The ser. # indicates '69, but the ser. #s are always "give or take a year or so". One of the pots looks like a replacement, the pickup is coded to 1970. $8500 for a '70s Fender bass of any model/color is way off the charts.. maybe if it was a '65 or '66.
