my # is D6 8010 (if the cereal #is by the input jacks) i just got it today. its all black even the hardware. It looks totally sweet, like a ninja. I havent seen anything like it.

  2. I post on the Rickenbacker forum a lot. John Hall knows a lot about these old basses.

According to the serial # D6 8010 , the year would be

    Rickenbacker Basses

    Model 4000, 1961......rare! # AC 255

Do you have any pictures of your Rick?

  3. How to "Date" your Rick!

The Rickenbacker company uses a very simple technique to date any Rickenbacker instrument. On the instrument in question .. simply locate the serial# on the jackplate, next to it is a 2 letter "date code" ... for example .. our recent trade in 4001S bass has the code UD.

Now before the serial # is 2 letters or one letter ..if the instrument has 2 letters .. here's how you do it . The first letter corresponds to the year of manufacturer and the second number corresonds to the month of manufacturer.
For the year .. assign a letter to each year starting with 1960 like so

    a=1961, b=1962, c=1963, d=1964, e=1965, f=1966, g=1967, h=1968, i=1969, j=1970, l=1971, k=1972, l=1973 , m=1974, n=1975, o=1976, p=1977, q=1978, r=1979, s=1980, t=1981, u=1982, v=1983, w=1984, x=1985, y=1986, z=1987

The second letter corresponds to the month of manufacturer like so
    A=Jan, B=feb, C=Mar, D=Apr, E=May, F=June, G=July, H=August, I=Sept. , J=Oct., K=Nov., L=Dec.

So.. our bass... with a code of UD is April of 1982 !! easy ... until .....

    after 1987 !!!

Now the first letter is the month of manufacturer as above . There is no second letter but the first number of the serial # is the year starting with ZERO as 1987 like so

    A0 Jan 1987
    A1 Jan 1988
    A2 Jan 1989
    A3 Jan 1990
    A4 Jan 1991
    A5 Jan 1992
    A6 Jan 1993
    A7 Jan 1994
    A8 Jan 1995
    A9 Jan 1996

Yours would be June 1964? whats the model #

  5. Rickenbacker Serial Numbers (How to Find the Year).
Rickenbacker serial numbers are the easiest way to find the year for a particular instrument.

    1932 to 1954 serial numbers
Serial numbers on these early models are unreliable. Some dating can be done by patent numbers printed on the guitar. This would be the earliest possible date of the instrument.

Solidbody Serial Numbers, 1954 to September 1959.
    + Number example: #(#)C####
+ Number is stamped on the jackplate or bridge.
    + Numeral(s) before letter designate model: 4=400 or 425, 6=600, 65=650, 8=800.
+ Letter (represented by "C" in above example) is type of instrument: C=combo (guitar), B=bass, M=mandolin, V=3/4 size.
+ First numeral after letter is year.
+ Last 3 numerals are number series.
+ Each model has its own series.
    + Example: 65C7123 = 1957 Combo 650, 4C6123 = 1956 Combo 400.
    + Exceptions:
    # Model 450 have 4C####A configuration.
    # 3/4 size models have V###, V#### or ####A thru Oct 1960, first numeral is still last digit of year.
    # Basses have B#### configuration.
    # Mandolins have M### configuration.
    # Some examples have #C## configuration. Dateable by serial number.

Solidbody (except 3/4 sizes) Serial Numbers, Sept 1959 to Oct 1960.
    o Number configuration: #(#)A###.
o Only 3 numerals after letter. Numbers do not contain date information.

Left: The serial number on any 1960 or later Rick (or 1958 and later hollowbody) is on the output jack plate. This is a 1958 Rickenbacker 345. The "3" means it has 3 pickups, the "V" means it has a vibrato.
Right: The serial number on a 360. The "GD" at the top of the jack means April 1967.

Hollowbody Serial Numbers, 1958 to October 1960.
    o Number configuration: #A## (early 1958), or #A###.
o Numeral before letter is number of pickups (2 or 3).
o Letter (denoted by "A" in above example) is "V" for vibrato, or "T" for standard tailpiece.
    o 1958 range of numbers seen: V80 to 3V254.
o Highest Capri series number in 1959: 2T835.
o First Capri series number in 1960: 3V706.
o Series (last 3 numerals) starts over with 001 in January 1960.
o Letter "R" replaces "T" or "V" on deluxe models only: June 1960.

Serial Numbers all models, October 1960 to 1986.
o Configuration: AA## or AA###, letters on jackplate above jack hole, numerals below jackhole.

Year First Letter Month Second Letter
    ---- ------------ ----- -------------
    1961 A Jan A
    1962 B Feb B
    1963 C Mar C
    1964 D Apr D
    1965 E May E
    1966 F Jun F
    1967 G Jul G
    1968 H Aug H
    1969 I Sep I
    1970 J Oct J
    1971 K Nov K
    1972 L Dec L
    1973 M
    1974 N
    1975 O
    1976 P
    1977 Q
    1978 R
    1979 S
    1980 T
    1981 U
    1982 V
    1983 W
    1984 X
    1985 Y
    1986 Z

Serial Number 1987 to 1991, all models.
o Configuration: A### or A####, number on jackplate, letter and 1 numeral above jack, 2 or 3 numerals below jack hole.
o Letter denotes month (see preceding table).
o Numeral after letter denotes year:

    Year Numeral after letter
    ---- --------------------
    1987 0
    1988 1
    1989 2
    1990 3
    1991 4

  6. Your bass was made in April of 1993. Probably one of the Shadow basses, if the all black hardware and such is original.

You can check any Rickenbacker serial number at http://www.rickenbacker.com/us/serial.asp (and find other interesting stuff about the company). You may also want to check out http://www.rickresource.com/ for more info and some nice pictures. Mr. Hall doesn't participate in the forum there as much as he used to, but it can still be fun to check out.

Congratulations on your find, enjoy playing it and welcome to the club. :)

Here's a quick reference from Mike Parks' site: http://www.the-music-connection.com/ricinfo.htm

It's definitely from April 1993 but it's not a Shadow, those were from the mid to late 1980s. An all-black with a 1993 date is just a Jetglo with black hardware option.

If I were you, I'd start with a nice quiet dinner at some out of the way Italian place, then maybe a movie, or if you're feeling extra romantic you can rent a movie and "stay in".

Sorry, but I can't believe nobody's said something like this yet :D

  9. Some are just too easy and must be passed up... By going there you open up the need to talk about the 1/4" sockets, too... Yes, this is an easy pun best passed on for the sanity and 'G' rating around here... ;)

From the sound of it you could have a Rickenbacker Blackstar bass. They were a special edition in the late 80's early 90's. The model was endorsed and used by Mike Mesaros - bassist of The Smithereens. It is essentially a 4003s - all black w/ black hardware and a black painted fingerboard with white "pin dot" fret markers. The body (being a 4003S) has no binding on it. Only 200 were made. I am the proud owner of #168 / 200.

Surely you jest, sir! Sanity? On a bass player's forum?

    I won't even address the G rating/String issue, it's a lost cause.

At least he could have all the wine to himself.

    HAVE YOU NO SHAME?

Uuuuhh, right, didn't think so ...

Couldn't be a Blackstar, they were done by 1989.

There's a pic is still up on the store's website. It's a 4003 with black hardware and trim except for white binding.
