As the title says, I’m looking to add a new string to my lineup. Currently I have: - MIA Fender 5 string Jazz - Sterling by MM S.U.B. series Ray4 - Guild 4 string acoustic - An old Jackson 4 string I do not have a Music shop nearby with a large selection for me to play different five strings. I’m leaning towards adding another sterling to the collection because I love the way my 4 string sounds. I just can’t seem to decide between the sub series Ray5, Ray 25 CA, and Ray 35. I know this question has probably been asked numerous times but through a quick search I was unable to find a definitive answer to which one is the best bang for your buck. The purpose of this bass, besides being just fun to play, would be to be the bass that I bring to work. I am a middle school science teacher that loves to jam during lunch but I don’t want to bring my fender every day. thanks for your help
I have no definitive guidance for you. However, if you're not aware of it already, of the three SBMM models you listed, the Ray25CA is the only one to incorporate a "slab" body design (i.e., no forearm contour, no tummy cut, etc.). Coming from a Jazz V and a SUB Ray 4, you might or might not enjoy playing a "slab" body.
I was not aware of that. Thank you for pointing that out about the slab body. Bummer bc I was really liking the color combo of a blue with tort pick guard that I found on Reverb.
It might not be an issue for you at all, but given your stated inability to test-drive prior to purchase, I would just make sure there's a generous return policy. As a long-time Fender Jazz player, the first time I test-drove a '51 Precision reissue, I noticed the difference right away, and that dissuaded me from purchasing it. That being said, I also own a Stratocaster (contoured) and a Telecaster (slab/uncontoured), and the Tele doesn't really bother me so much. So, it's a highly personal thing.
I had the 5HH on the list too but worried about the neck pickup getting in the way when slapping and plucking. A few reviews said it was an issue and a few said with a little adjustments it was fine.
