    Hi,

This is my first post on Talkbass. I own a Fender Geddy Lee and I'm currently customizing it (and I love doing that!). Now, I need your help about a new preamp.
The original one is ok but I want to extend its sound possibilities without losing its passive tone.
In fact, the preamp I need is one with a passive/active switch AND a tone control.
I tought I've found the right one... but I were disappointed. The John East J-Retro has it all, but the tone is only on the Deluxe version (4 knobs), so it cannot fit on a standard jazz bass (the Deluxe is made for a Fender Deluxe Jazz bass with the side jack).
Also, I would like to do not have to cut into the bass......if you know what I mean.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

Sadly, the Audere JZ3 has none of these requirements.
It's the first one I looked for.

Send David at Audere an email and tell him what you need, he may not offer it in stock configuration but I bet he can hook you up.

    Another question :

David from Audere told me that this Bartolini won't fit in a standard Jazz Bass:

    www.bestbassgear.com
Bartolini NTBT 2 pickup, 3 knob
3.3 A/P - Click here for layout diagram

    2 Pickup - 3 knob configuration

    Controls:
    - Volume (w/Active-Passive Push-Pull)
    - Blend
    - Treble/Bass stack.

    3.3 A/P - In stock - $130 - [ Add to cart ]

Will it enter the cavity of a Geddy Lee without modifying it?

    Thanks!

Do you need bass/treble control on the active preamp? If not, you could keep a 3-hole setup: volume (pull passive), volume, tone (or vol/blend/tone). There's not a lot of options that fit into a Jazz without routing, because remember you have to have room for the battery. East and Audere are direct replacements I believe.

Audere preamps can have a "standard treble roll off", which is a tone control... I think that it only works in active mode, though... mhy understanding is the Audere preamp is so transparent that when everything is set to flat, it sounds like there is no preamp attached, so the only purpose of a completely passive mode is if your battery starts to go.

I think I will finally go for a J-retro, but I would have loved to have a passive tone on it instead of, lets say, the Mid Frequency...

Anyway, I want the passive/active switch to have a maximum of possible sounds. I like the passive sound of the GL, but I like powerful active tones too (something like Marcus Miller or similar).

    I know I'm asking a lot of things, but a J-retro is $320 USD + shipping (Canada)...

    I think you understand :smug:

The PERFECT setup would be :

    (3 knobs)
    Volume/Blend Stack,
    Active/Passive switch,
    Treble/Bass boost-cut,
Mid boost-cut/Passive tone (working in active too).

I think the closest preamp is a J-Retro. Am I right?

    --------
P.S.: SBD, when you're talking about a "standard treble roll off", wich Audere preamp is it? JZ3? JZ3D? 3ZB?

The original one? These basses are passive from the factory.

The factory one is passive, of course...
    but that's not the point.

Any of you has a Bartolini 9CBJS soundclip?

P.S.: Sorry for repeating, but I don't want this thread to go nowhere

The issue you will find complicated is the mid control stacked with a passive tone.

You can easily find 25K/250K stacked pots... but the 50K/250K are pretty slim pickin's...

I have never found the mid control to be that useful (for *me*), also I've never seen a reason to *cut* the bass. So, I use an Aguilar OBP-1 (bass and treble boost) combined with a passive tone control (useable in both active and passive modes).

I lay that conrol out something like this:

Stacked vol/passive treble roll-off (classic tone control)
4-way rotary switch for pickup selection and seies/parallel switching
    stacked bass/treble

Stacked volume/blend is pretty hard to come by, too.

Most of my questions have been answered so far..

    Just one remaining:

In between the J-retro and J-retro deluxe, the deluxe version has a passive tone (wich works in passive, too). Is it possible, on the J-retro, to "achieve the same effect (the same work as a tone would do)" with the EQ or other settings?

    Thanks!

Just to play "devil's advocate", there are outboard preamps such as the Sadowsky that will essentially give you an active preamp while still keeping your bass stock and passive...

+1 Worth checking into for sure. People rave about the Sadowsky and also the Aguilar units and they have an XLR out so they can act as a DI box for live purposes or recording. I've never used the Aguilar (though I've heard good things) but I have used the Sadowsky and that box is a pure magic. It can make a piece of junk bass sound like gold! These units are cheaper than the J Retro onboard preamps you are talking about.
