How would one go about finding the mechanical advantage of a pulley system?
Number of ropes supporting the weight.
If you resolve all the forces and the tension, you will see that the upward force that you are exerting on the mass you are lifting equals to the total tension in all the ropes lifting it. Tension in all the ropes are equal, and are also equal to your pulling force. Therefore the number of ropes "lifting" the mass = the mechanical advantage. 2 ropes, 2 times advantage, 5 ropes, 5 times advantage.
