  1. Ok bassists of the world...

Whilst browsing a local internet auction site I came across this bass:

Intrigued by the basses “hint-of-a-Roscoe-meets-Fbass” body styling (and it’s 5th string and lack of frets) I investigated further.

It turned out that the seller knew little about this “unusual 5 string base guitar”, so I requested pictures of the headstock, back of the bass and control cavity (if it had one). He responded quickly with this:

That’s right. It seems it is more of a “hint-of-a-Roscoe-meets-Fbass-meets-Mr-Wishnevsky” mystery bass (although there is some evidence of a truss rod).

Does this bass look familiar to anyone? The headstock is fairly distinctive, so I imagine it may have stuck in someone’s memory. The back of the headstock/neck has a very ‘mass-produced-somewhere-in-Asia’ feel to it, IMO.

I’ve been keeping an eye out for an unlined fretless for sometime, and will not be able to try before I buy, so any info / past experiences with this make /model of bass would be great.

*Amazing prizes not available to Talkbass members, unregistered browsers, associates or their family, relatives or pets.

  3. Ah... that does sound right. Thanks.

Well... that was the shortest mystery ever. Er... what shall we do now...?

There was one exaclty like that at Steve's Music store in Montreal a few years back. Same color. I used to salivate over it when I didn't have the money for it. Then it was gone :crying:

But seriously, how much do they go for? I've never actually tried one, are they any good, or just really cool looking?

  7. Don't know at this stage - it's an auction with a minimum starting bid of NZ$200 (~US$138) & an unknown reserve. Since the seller seems to know little about instruments, I'm not sure how realistic the reserve will be.

Phil Mastro, do you recall how much the one was you have seen?

edit: It seems there was a review of the Samick SAKB 5-6690 FL in the 2000/2001 edition of the German mag "Bass Professor". Do any euro-tbs recall this?
