Aside from the protruding tailpieces, I would have just assumed it was a one-off project.

  3. Yeah, I remember those. Like this:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7406158936
But the F-holes weren't quite the right shape and they didn't go all the way thru the back of the body.

But they still look nice. I'm looking forward to seeing what they look like finished.

I would really like to check out one of Bruce Johnson's basses , it seems he takes a very fine modern appraoch to constructing them.

  8. Yeah, the tailpieces are definately from an Ampeg.

The nut/trussrod also looks like it's original, but the shape of the neck/headstock joint looks different:

Does that looklike an ebony fretboard?

I was planning on getting this bass on Ebay, and then the auction ended. :( :(

I emailed Bruce Johnson (http://www.xstrange.com/) and he told me that it's a modded 1967 Ampeg AUB-1 (or a AEB-1 with a new fretless board). Body was of course modified, or a very similar one built up.

  10. Man I hate those GC ebay auctions! The guy(s) who post them generally have no clue what they are selling and ask way too much anyway. It's usually some beat to hell action high enoght to drive a truck thru POS. But they "write ooh ooh whoa! Vintage bad boy! Tone for days!!" for like a T40.

  11. Sorry. :( If I decide not to keep it I'll let you know.
Thanks for the info.I was going to email him and see if I could get a replacement tailpiece for it and then try some long-scale strings on it.

    Hi Marshall

Do you think you might want to get one of Bruces basses ?

I'd love to, but I can't swing it financially at the moment...and I never see them used! Bruce seems to be a great guy and one of The innovators of electric bass.

Maybe I could get one in green someday. :p

Hey thats what I was thinking ! I almost got one once when I saw the old prices still listed on his site but when I called and Realized the price nearly doubled that put it off.

  16. Marshall, I sent you a PM about a fairly-reasonably-priced semi-original Ampeg scroll fretless that may be up your alley.
