Help me choose a 5 string Bass

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by MycooLeeyun, Oct 11, 2021 at 1:22 PM.

  1. I love the look of Kiesel's - not alot of used ones come up

  2. The string spacing might be an issue for me. I'd prefer 18-19mm

  3. Aren't they 35" scale?

SO many options! Although I think 35” is very popular when you get into extended range.

not all of these meet all your criteria but I think any of them would be a good choice despite that (they do fit your price point though)

At the high end of your price point
    MusicMan Bongo
    Stingray Special
    Modulus M-92
    Modulus Genesis

    Mid-range
    Peavey Cirrus
    Ibanez BTB or EHB
    Warwick Corvette
    Carvin (now Kiesel)
    MTD Kingston
    Reverend Mercalli 5

    Cheaper options
    Ibanez SR
    Schecter Stiletto
    Yamaha TRBX

My personal recommendation is MusicMan. Deep and Articulate, the neck makes for an easy transition to 5 strings, you won’t need to swap pickups. Outstanding QC and build quality. They retain value pretty well too (used that is).

Definitely try to get out and demo a few especially if you’re looking to spend $2k. What’s comfortable on 4 strings may not be what’s comfortable for you with 5. Huge difference in feel.

  5. I used to own a Stingray 5 HS - it was incredible and one of the basses I regret selling

then I think you just answered your own question!

The specials are just a little more mellow when compared to the classic but they are also much lighter in weight, have more headroom, more flexible EQ/tone control, and are more ergonomic

Definitely in your price range new though.... I'd get a fiver and have them install some Nordstrand pickups in there - I believe they will do this. ....not the exact pickup you are thinking of but try and play a Yamaha BBP35 too....

Very happy with this one. And it cost less than my last Fender P.

As a matter of fact I bought one of these 2 days ago.
Mine is a special with a beautiful walnut top with matching headstock veneer, matching walnut pup covers, 3 band active eq. series/single/parallel switches for each pup too.
A beautiful beast of a bass!
