OK Folks. I have my first gig with the new band this Saturday 19th. It's Alt-Country type stuff. My choices: MIM standard jazz (Sunburst with tortoise guard and covers), MIM Preceision special with PJ (black with gold ano guard) 51 RI Precision sunburst with covers. they all sound great. I prefer the 51RI for tone. THe style of music doesn't require a lot of different sounds, so a one trick pony like the 51RI should be fine. (plus I think it looks cool) Right now I'm thinking 51RI main bass, PJ prec. as backup. anyone want to convince me otherwise?
I have a Precision MIM Special. I love it. I have had it since 2000. It now is my back up bass, but I would never part with it. It is versitile, well rounded and sounds great. I love the 1-1/2" nut width and the feel of the neck. I get so many compliments about that specific bass. It is a treat to play. I have since gone to playing 5 string though. That is the only reason I have put this one down. When it comes down to it, They are not that pricey, very easy to upgrade to EMG's and a BadAssII bridge and you will have a bass that is a treat to play.
Nope. Any of those basses would do the job. I would play the one you are most comfortable with. Good luck and have fun!
Best advice on the page. I played one gig where I broke my A string on the first number and played the rest of the evening with 3 strings - a real challenge. Always take backup (or at the very least a set of strings). (BTW - I'm a guitar player who switched to bass about three years ago and would never have gone to a gig on guitar without extra strings. This was the first time I had ever broken a string on a bass - it happens. )
This is really easy, of course your choice should be the coolest looking bass . I have always choosed the coolest looking gear, even if it sounds bad, sound is not so important factor than everybody seems to think, IMHO.
