    Hi,
I am going to be upgrading from my peavey combo115 with an extension 2x12 to a better amp in the next week or two but i am still not sure what i want. I dont live close to any music stores that have anything other that beat up old junk so its going to be tough to try out any amps. I would like to steer away from a combo and go with a head and cabinet stack, and i will almost definitely be getting used gear (more bang for the buck). Some of the heads i was considering was the Ampeg SVT3 pro, the SVT350H, or the B2R. Also I was considering an swr bass 350 or one of the SM models. I have never tried any of these though so i am kind of unsure. I am almost sure however that the cab i will be getting is an SVT810, just because i think they are cool as hell. I have heard that SWR amps through ampeg cabs dont mix well but I dont know if thats true or not. I play in a 3 piece rock/metal band (black sabbath, pink floyd, etc) with a LOUD drummer and a 50 watt and 4x12 guitarist. My current 300 watt setup isnt quite cutting it, which i am pretty sure is due to the mediocre speakers. I dont much care for the sound of the bigger speakers anymore either, theyre just too dull and dead sounding (no punch or clarity), but again theyre not the greatest ones out there. Oh, by the way i play a '73 ric 4001 and a Fender jazz. I have anywhere between $1000, and $1200 to spend on the whole setup. Any insight into what you fellas would reccomend is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

well a new 8x10 is about $1000 to begin with, so you might want to consider a 4x10 or ported 4x10. Also, the amps you mentioned don't have much power either. The SVT350 and the B2R have 350 watts @ 4 ohms and the SVT3 has 450 watts @ 4 ohms.

I think your best bet is a used SVT-3 PRO and a used 810E. Excellent tone, sufficient power, great value. The SVT-3 has the best tone out of any amp Ive ever played in my life. You will not be disappointed with it. As for the 810, it has a good sound and can handle a lot of power. The only problem is its 4 feet tall and weighs a ton, so unless you have a pickup truck, you're gonna have a hard time moving it around.

If you want to get one component used and one new, get the cab used. A new tube head is always a better bet than a used one because you dont know what condition the tubes are in.

A new SVT3 is ~ $850 and a new 8x10 is ~ $950. You can probably get a good used deal if you check www.ebay.com or your local pawnshop.

    Good luck
