Help me date my Ampeg!

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by BassBoyLeroy, Jul 26, 2004.

  1. Hey there, I need some help putting an exact date on my SVT-II Pro. I purchased it at GC about a year ago, and it has the old-style graphics. The guys at the store said that it had been there for a while and the only reason they were selling it so cheap was because the graphics on the front had changed. Anyone have any idea when this occured? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

    Ever since I've been playing bass (4 years) I've known Ampeg with the new graphics. I'm gonna guess that they made that switch in the late 90's. That's when the B-Series heads were introduced, and I'm pretty sure they've always had the new graphics.

    Dating recent Ampeg gear:

    here's the "secret code"
    5th and 6th spaces of the serial # tell you the year the month that the amp was made (SLM YEARS ONLY...and this applies to crate as well)

    6th (month) 1=jan 2=feb...etc
    5th (year)

    If you would like to date your Ampeg, I would start by asking it out to dinner. Flowers would be a good idea as well. :D

    Yours would have been made in August of 2000. Here's a better explanation of SLM-era Ampeg serial numbers from the unofficial Ampeg page:

    The modern Ampegs of the St. Louis Music era were all made after 1985. The amps made since 1988 have a 10-digit serial number which is encoded for model, country, date, and year. The serial number can be broken down as follows:

    Digits 1, 2, 3 = Model

    Digit 4 = Country Code where:
    U = U.K.
    D = domestic U.S.
    W = worldwide
    Y = Europe

    Digit 5 = Year where:
    A = 1988
    B = 1989
    C = 1990, etc.

    Digit 6 = Month where:
    1 through 9 = January through September
    0 = October
    A = November
    B = December

    Digits 7, 8, 9, 10 = serial number

    Just more stuff from the fine folks at UL and the EU safety agency.

    They say you have to be able to trace the date of production down to a minimum time slot. And the tracing system can't repeat for a certain number of years.

    Hence the system.
