I have both, don't fight the urge
Last time I checked, a new 4003 is only a couple of hundred more, and as you and others have said, considerably less than $2K.
Here's one from Craigslist that's only $600!
I may be way off base but it seems to me that the majority of opinion diffs surround the neck and picking/plucking/slapping area mechanics. It seems that it really fits and works for some but is horrendously nasty for others.
That's just a bit of a fixer upper.
And it was used at a death metal concert!
I don't get it either! I don't talk smack about a bass just cause I don't like it, even if I think it sucks. Taste is totally subjective. Seems kinda dumb that ppl get all crazy over something so trivial. Eh...
I own two Rics. The make great wall hangers!
I'm about 99% with you on that, I think... although I do love the Fireglo.
Sure, so do I. Can't justify spending big bucks on one right now, so I've been checking out similar stuff.
I'm sure that will buff right out.
Red one looks like a Dean Hillsboro - what's the other two? They look cool too. I'm digging' the white one
I read in a different post that RICs have 2 truss rods. That could be an argument against getting one.
That being said, I tested one at GC. I understand where you're coming from.
Now that's just sad.
Two great tastes, that taste great together...like chocolate and peanut butter ! Get em' both!!!
(some) Fender guys love Rickenbackers, too
I'm likely the odd one out. I've been at it for 40 years - serious studio and live work. Ignoring the constant trading up when a young teenager, I've never sold a bass or guitar.
I play at least 2 different basses each day. As I now do mostly studio work, I care only about tone. I'm not a 5-stringer, but using one tomorrow in a session. I don't care for small necks, but used my mustang w Labella flats on a track a couple of weeks ago. I've probably used my Aria Pro II SB900 on more tracks in the past 30 years than any other. In the late 70s and early 80s, I probably used my Fender J, Ric, and Aria pretty evenly in the studio and the J and Ric pretty evenly live. In the mid 80s, I probably used the Aria and J evenly live but the Ric almost exclusively in the studio.
So, for me personally, I just want a bass with the tone I need - mostly a function of strings and pickups, I'm guessing.
(Complete disclosure - I am not a slapper; I predominantly play w fingers - pick is rare.)
Sweet! There ya have it
Dean Motto...better than the Hillsboro, slightly, and I mean slightly different body and different headstock.
The black one is the Schecter Stargazer, available in white and a model they call Crimson Ghost.
The Vintage White one is from Retrovibe, UK.
There was a Retrovibe thread here about a month or two back.
