Normally I wouldn’t post something like this but I’m struggling. Would love to hear some suggestions.

current go-to basses: Rickenbacker 4003, Fender Jazz (Geddy Lee), and Thorn P/J.

Love PRS basses but not looking to add one of those back right now.

Not a fan of the EBMM or the Warwick. Like the Dingwalls and the G&L but not enough to buy one again.

Must be a 4 string. What should I be looking at for options/ideas?

    Budget constraints are useful.

If you like your Jazz Bass, I would say Sadowsky with that budget.

I tend to really like the P/J and humbucker pickups. But I like thinner necks. I’ll check one out for sure!

Since you say no to G&L, let me suggest one of the best-kept secrets in the bass world...the Reverend Thundergun!

My 2 cents: Under 5k get an Alembic (used of course). For a really 'real' j or p try Wilkins.

5k should get you a really nice alembic and depending on the model, get some change from your 5k.
Not mine and no connection with the seller but this custom spoiler on line.

That gives you a ton of choices! :greedy:
If you like thinner necks, but want a very specific pickup suite, I'd look into a custom Warmoth body paired to either an MIJ or MIM Geddy Lee neck, with the MIJ's being the thinnest of the two. As for the body, you could have it routed to accept all sorts of split-able/tap-able humbuckers. Two or more switches and you could bounce between all sorts of pickup configurations…P/J, P/H, H/H, J/J, etc…

If you don't have a Stingray in your arsenal, the new specials are awesome.

If I was in the market for a new bass I would be quite interested in a few of the Reverend offerings

At the bottom of your budget you’ll get a chameleon of a bass, with a narrow neck, light weight. If you’re like me, you’ll probably want a bit more top-end to the pups, so swap them for some Lollars, and you’re good to go.

What about something in the used Fodera lineup? I've never played or even seen one, but if I had your budget, that would be on my short list of candidates.

Someone already mentioned Alembic basses which I would try as well. I think $5k could easily get you into both of those brands if you stay in the used market.

You have a lot of money to spend, with that budget why not get something custom?

The world is your oyster with a budget like that. I’ve got an idea from what you already own. But what genre(s) of music do you play?
