Without being able to play them and compare side by side, just going off a spec comparison, I'd say the Lakland. I like the ash body vs the alder body, you can get more tones with the additional pickup potentially, and hipshot tuners vs the fender lightweights.

i don't know anything about either one, but on the face of it:
    - the lakland is better.
    - the fender is overpriced.

good luck with your choices!

I'd pick the Lakland just because it has a Jazz-width neck.

Good taste in basses. If I had to pick from two basses at Sweetwater it would probably be these two also. It’s a tough call for me! I would probably lean toward the lakland - the ebony board and pj pickups look cool

  6. Oh, come on. If you really want to waste money you need to spend a LOT more than that. Go with some boutique brand that sells for $5000+. Or at least a Custom Shop artist signature model.

That said, if I were looking at those two I'd probably go for the Fender, but I wouldn't be likely to be looking at those two, so my opinion doesn't really mean anything. The last time I was in the market for a 34" mainstream rock bass, I bought a StingRay. I do own Fender basses, but I bought MIM models used and then replaced all the electronics.

Now when you go to auditions the guitar dude can tell you to how much better you will be when you save up the money for a real Fender.

Get the Lakland except get the Duck Dunn. There's no payoff in a J bridge when you have a P, but there IS money in CAR + matching headstock + bound & blocked rosewood.

The Lakland for build quality, tone and playability. I own 16 US Fenders and 1 Lakland Skyline. The Lakland gets most of the playing time. Having said that, The Geezer is HEAVY which is the only reason I don’t own one....they all weigh in at well over 10 lbs.
