    Hi:

got a DBX 166 compressor/limiter/gate off ebay. Of course, no manual came with it. Been fiddling with it but I'm unsure of the settings and the plug-in.

    I use a SWR Workingman's 4004 amp and a peavey bin.

    questions:

    1. Plug-in? Do I plug it into the side effects loop on my amp or from the "Send" and "Return" jacks? If I was using the Send jack, does it go into the "In" on my DBX and the "out" goes to the return??

    2. Settings. It's greek to me. Overeasy, Threshold, Output Gain, etc. Suggested settings for a bass setup live??

    Get the Owner's Manual.pdf Here

    Single Channel Operation

    FX Loop
    FX Send to dbx In
    dbx out to FX Return

    Overeasy ON
    Auto OFF
    SC Enable OFF (side chain)
    Threshold -10
    Ratio 3:1 to 4:1
    Output Gain +3

Using Both Channels Chained: Stereo Couple OFF

    FX Loop
FX Send to Channel 1 dbx In
Channel 1 Out to Channel 2 In
Channel 2 Out to FX Return.

    Channel 1:
    Overeasy ON
    Auto OFF
    SC Enable OFF (side chain)
    Contour ?
    Threshold -10
    Ratio 2:1
    Output Gain +3
    Peak Stop +16 to +18

    Channel 2:
    Overeasy ON
    Auto OFF
    SC Enable OFF (side chain)
    Contour ?
    Threshold 0
    Ratio 6:1
    Output Gain +3
    Peak Stop +16 to +18

With instrument plugged in and everything on and
set to playing levels; set the Expander Gates:

Setting the Expander Gates is another thing.

In general just set the Thresholds at -35 (10:00)

Release: 2:00 notch (on the slow side).

The dbx Output XLR will provide a signal to the board while
the 1/4" provides the same signal to your amp...
    Another DI!
