Hey guys I'm looking at getting a new rig. I have right now an SWR 12 stack 4x12. I need a new head or pre-amp/power-amp setup. What do you think will be more versatile (also bang for the buck)? Looking for a used 350x,750x,SM-400,SM-500, or getting a used Grand Prix with a used power-amp, or going with a used Interstellar Overdrive with a used power amp? I will have between $500-$600.

    THANKS

I'd buy the pre first, maybe you would need to save some more money, to buy an adequate poweramp later. I have one Goliath III Jr. and one Son of Bertha, and I feed each one with 600 watts (QSC power amp). Doing so, I can't imagine that any of the mentioned heads (maybe the 750x) will deliver enough balls to drive some speakers of that kind. They are efficient, but they also like the power. BTW, having the 30Hz highpass filter of the poweramp enabled, safes quite a bit power and speaker-wear. Even whenn I clip the power amp with a huge b-string-slap, the speakers won't move noticably, and still the bass is all there!

PS: Are you going to keep you 4x12?

I'm keeping the 4x12 till it dies. It sounds amazing even with my pathtetic peavey mark 3 head:bawl: and my 1981 aria pro II fretless:bawl: But I'm getting a Warrior later this month :D :bassist: and then I move on to my amp problem.:meh:

I think in that price range, you could easily afford a used 350 or 400s (more power than the 400), maybe a 500 and I doubt a 750. That said go for the most power you can afford.

yea, your cab takes 800 watts RMS, you could easily connect a 1,6 kilowatt poweramp if you don't clip it hard.

I have a nice used SM400S for sale. It's one of the nicest amps that SWR ever made...email me and I'll give you a good price on it. I have an ad in the Gear For Sale Forum.
