Hi guys, could use some expert advice on this one. There's this P bass listed close by to where I live. It's advertised as a 1978, but the odd thing(s) is I never seen this binding and these inlays. Any ideas what this is? Was the fretboard changed or could this be factory original. Or some kind of a parts bass? Any idea on what's a fair price for this type and condition? Regards SP Bass
No idea what this is but it looks like a bass that was heavily mess with at some point. I asked the guy some more pics.
The fretboard looks like an early 80s transition jazz bass, they had dots and binding. Knobs and pickup look a bit too clean considering the finish wear. Also if that's a brass nut it's not original, and there's two extra screws in the headstock. From an extra string retainer, perhaps?
True, the wear doesn’t match across the bass . Even the screws on the pickguard are too mint in comparison, but what I find the most confusing are the inlays on the fretboard. If you zoom in, you’ll see what I mean Thanks for the replies guys
Looks like someone has changed out a few things. Those are older pre-76 tuners. 78 tuners look like these —
It’s a pretty nice looking bass, it just has some non-original stuff on it. It also has a couple extra screws in the front of the headstock. Looks like where someone had some kind of extra string tree for the “A” string.
