my dad told me not to get an effect, or think about getting effects until I have played for a year i have played for about 6 months and i really like effects,,, so i want to get distortion
i was thinking arion bass distortion its only 19.99 but everyone says its junk,,, and that it only has arion distortion
but, i was thinking about getting the arion guitar distortion, it has great reviews and its only 14.99 but if i use it on bass will it lack bottom end or could i just boost bass on amp, i really want an effect good effect for about 25-35 dollars also whats phaser used for???

well, you get what u pay for. I have no personal experience with arion stuff, but its definitely far from anything professional. If you want good distortion, try getting the Boss ODB-3. I got mine used for like 40 dollars i think. Really I don't think there any many options for stuff in that price range.

A phaser's a sweeping-like effect, its not awfully commonly used on bass however.

You can afford to experiment at $19.99. Buying expensive "pro" pedals when you haven't been playing long enough to develop a good clean sound yet doesn't really make sense. If your dad says it's cool, buy the Arion BASS pedal. That way you aren't out too much money if distortion isn't your thing.
