My new computer has been de-virginised and now has 8 popups come up for every 1 click.

Has anyone got any (or know of any) software or something that kills these things. I type in 'pop up killers' on google, then go to a site and i get about 60 more pop ups.

ok now, ive said the word 'pop ups' so many times its lost all meaning! :bawl:

ad-aware and spybot both get installed on all my machines right after Norton.

you can get both at www.download.com

On my personal machine... the solution is to right after that, install Mozilla and use it for surfing and email. I work for an Internat service provider / telephone company and employees are FORBIDDEN from using any Microsoft Internet application.
  3. i'd also say its time for a new browser....I use Opera and never have pop up problems. Firefox is good too.

Your browser has been hijacked. Are you familiar with the Windows registry? Run "regedit" and search for the "Run" and "RunOnce" entries. Look for something that matches the name of a .exe file in your local Temp directory

    \Documents and Settings\"your user name"\Local Settings\Temp

There shouldn't be any executable files in that directory. If there are, delete them, and delete the registry entries that point to them. That should take of the problem. Then you can go to your favorite site and download some computer security tools. I use AdAware, Hijack This, and the ZoneAlarm firewall. Hijack This is a somewhat advanced tool, there'll be a bit of a learning curve, but it's very effective and it'll detect "almost everything" that's even remotely questionable in your machine.

In case you're running Windows XP, the brandnew Servicepack 2 brings you a popup-blocker.

Clean up with Lavasoft's Ad Aware, then start using Mozilla Firefox as your browser.
  8. I've been fairly happy with no-ads as my pop-up blocker. coupled with spy-bot, of course.
  9. Download Google toolbar.

I have one at home. I leave it on all the time.. and now i have over 8000 pops blocked since ive installed.

On my pops Laptop i have a Nortan Pop-up Blocker.. Thats a little too good!
