First off, which Ampeg do you have? Is it the SVT-CL or a real vintage (classic) SVT?
  3. dirty socket potentially. Use some reputable electronic contact cleaner on it and "massage" the connections by pluggin/unplugging a few dozen times.

Otherwise, could even be a dry solder joint or two.

    Could be the problems mentioned.

Could also be the older output circuit, which did not use the transformer isolation. Has somewhat higher output and may have more noise if run into a hotter input.

If posible, try a lower gain input, or a pad on the input and see where that gets you.

    What is the serial number?
