help with a 5 string bass

  1. hey,

    im getting a new bass and i don't know if i should get a 5 string or just another standard 4 string, im 14 n this will only be my second guitar. It'd b great if i could get some advice.

    Do you ever find that you want to play a lower note than a low E?
    If not, get a 4.
    If so, get a 5.
     
  3. Or, do you go higher than high Eb (on a 20-fret instrument)? Remember, you don't HAVE to put a low B on a five-string.

    The real value in a fifth string, be it low B or high C, is not the five or so extra notes available, but rather the increased range that can be attained in a single position (meaning, less moving around on the fingerboard), which can be handy.

    That said, I myself largely prefer four-strings. But when I play fives, they're gonna be strung with a treble C:D
